Diploma of Design - Individual Assignments

The first year at AIE is a foundational course. I found alot of my time taken up with basic work i had a solid grasp of. As such, i used the time and assessments as a way to challenge myself. pushing myself to create as complete works as i could with the skills i had in short periods of time.

Art Module

The first module of the year, the art module was focused on showing that you had a basic understanding of how the 3D art pipeline worked. Tasked with creating a level from assets you built yourself, i focused on putting together the initial scenes of a horror game focused on a protagonist that isn’t specifically incapable, but is still just a generally average individual. 3D Art isn’t my strong suit, but i was happy with what i was able to put together in 3 weeks with a very modest amount of scripting. Overall it works as an initial conceptual prototype, though its execution is admittedly sloppy.

Programming Module

The programming module was easier to experiment with. While my experience with coding in something like Python is nonexistent, I had spent the previous five years or so working within Unity and its monobehaviour extensions to C#. I dont have the in-depth knowledge of C++ that the programmers at AIE do, but i was able to create a spaceship sim that worked within 3 Dimensions and used forces to move around. It wasnt a perfect simulation, but it was an incredibly valuable experience that has helped broaden my understanding of AI Entities and UiX.

Narrative Module

The Narrative module was the second to last assignment, but it was my last chance in the year to experiment before my final group assignment where others would rely on me to create a professional piece of work. The Narrative module was supposed to be focused on telling a story. It was to be completed within 3 weeks, with a week of pre production. I pushed myself incredibly hard for this project, putting in nearly three times as much time as was available. While the final product is quite flawed, im still incredibly proud of what i managed to complete. This short piece tells the tale of a small rag tag space ship crew focused on escaping from a ship that is crumbling around them. It involved a lot of complicated AI design and implementation that ended up being beyond me. However, the process of creating the work taught me how much needs to go in to create a full product that not only tells a story but also plays well.
